Les satellites géostationnaires et circumpolaires

Un petit point sur les satellites qui nous donnent des informations précieuses pour les prévisions météorologiques.

Il existe deux types de satellites météorologiques : les satellites géostationnaires et les circumpolaires.

Satellite géostationnaire

Un satellite géostationnaire est un satellite qui tourne autour de la Terre en vingt-quatre heures tout en restant en permanence au-dessus d’un même lieu. Ce type de satellite est situé directement au-dessus de l’équateur et à une distance d'environ 36 000 km.

Satellite circumpolaires

Un satellite circumpolaire tourne autour de la Terre à basse altitude (entre 600 et 1000 km) selon une trajectoire avec une forte inclinaison passant près des pôles. Il est héliosynchrone, c’est-à-dire que son axe de rotation est perpendiculaire à l’axe entre le Soleil et la Terre. Il donne des informations plus précises sur les mouvements de masses d’air et a pour particularité de passer au-dessus de l’équateur et de chaque latitude à la même heure chaque jour.
